CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS, August 15, 2017 (PLP PR Media Inc.) -- Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris joined thousands of Nevisians, Kittitians, residents, returning nationals and visitors on Tuesday August 8 in the historical Charlestown as the island of Nevis witnessed Culturama 43’s final act, the Last Lap, where colourful troupes marched along the Island Main Road.

Dr Harris who is also the National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP), one of the three parties in the ruling Team Unity Administration noted that culture is a uniting factor for the people of the two sister islands. It was for that reason that Kittitians travel to Nevis for Culturama and in reverse Nevisians travel to St. Kitts for the National Carnival.

“However, the relationship between these two sister-islands took a new meaning since February 2015 when the Team Unity Administration took office,” said Prime Minister Harris. “Team Unity Government has looked beyond the culture that binds the two peoples, with the establishment of our Economic Development Programme because the wellbeing and prospects for Nevisians really matter to me.”

Prime Minister Harris explained: “The island of Nevis has had a bad history of being poorly treated with bounced cheques for the Nevis Island Administration, from the Federal Government. Since Team Unity came to power, every month we are giving budgetary support of about $2.5 million to the Nevis Island Administration.”

According to Dr Harris, since February 2015 when the Team Unity Administration came to power the Nevis Island Administration had received over $60 million which he said was a change in the dynamics in the relationships and in the co-operative approach between Federal and Local Governments.

The other parties in the Team Unity Administration are the People’s Action Movement (PAM) of St. Kitts, and the Nevis-based Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM).

Prime Minister Harris was accompanied to Nevis by the PLP National Deputy Leader Senator the Hon Akilah Byron Nisbett, PLP National Secretary Ms Myrtilla Williams, Deputy National Chairman Mr Craig Tuckett, Party Organiser Mr Alexis Nisbett, and Women’s Arm Representative Mrs Sonia Henry.

While meeting and greeting people who were out to witness this year’s last lap, Prime Minister Harris also met and held discussions with the Hon Troy Liburd, Junior Minister for Communications and Works in the Nevis Island Administration.

Speaking to this media later in the evening, the Prime Minister said that he was happy that his Team Unity Administration had addressed some of the injustices that the island of Nevis had received from the previous administration.

“People are happy judging from the way they have received us, and also the way they are receiving other visitors to their shores,” said Dr Harris. “We have now reached a point where we need to look ahead for the good of our people because we are all one. Many Kittitians have roots in Nevis, and I am the son of a proud Nevisian, while some Nevisians also have their roots in St. Kitts.”

He added: “It is a blessing that we have an activity like the Culturama Festival which not only keeps our culture alive, but also brings us together to remind us that we are one and that we are our brother’s keepers. The organisers of this festival which is now into its 43rd year require the commendation of all of us for a job well done over the years.”

On Monday August 7 Prime Minister Harris, accompanied by the Deputy National Chairman of the PLP Mr Craig Tuckett, and who were later joined by the Chairman of the PLP Constituency Number Two Branch Mr Nubian Greaux visited the popular Herbert’s Beach Affair, one of the activities for the Culturama Festival.
