    Double whammy for Leeward Islands

BASSETERRE, St Kitts - WHILE citizens and residents in the Federation are bracing for the impact of Category 5 Hurricane Irma, news broke this morning (Sept. 5) that the Tropical Cyclone following her has been upgraded to a Tropical Storm.

With heavy winds and associated rainfall expected to begin this evening by Hurricane Irma, the National Hurricane Center in its 11:00 a.m. report placed the eye of the Hurricane near latitude 16.8 North, longitude 58.4 West.

Irma is said to be moving toward the west near 14 mph (22 km/h) and this general motion is expected to continue today, followed by a turn toward the west-northwest tonight, the NHC report stated.

On the forecast track, the extremely dangerous core of Irma is forecast to move over portions of the northern Leeward Islands tonight and early Wednesday.

Reports from the Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicated that the maximum sustained winds are near 180 mph (285 km/h) with higher gusts.

Irma is an extremely dangerous Category 5 Hurricane, the National Hurricane Center stressed, pointing out that some fluctuations in intensity are likely during the next day or two, but she is forecast to remain a powerful Category 4 or 5 Hurricane during the next couple of days.

While all eyes are on Irma, Tropical Storm Jose has developed and is following the same path as the current hurricane.

According to the NHC 11:00 a.m. report, the center of Tropical Storm Jose was located near latitude 12.3 North, longitude 39.1 West.

Jose is said to be moving west-northwest near 13 mph (20 km/h) and a movement toward the west or west-northwest at a slightly faster rate of forward speed is expected during the next two days.

Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Jose could become a hurricane by Friday.

Jose is the 10th Tropical Storm to form this season and is expected to develop into a Category 2 Hurricane next week.
