Hurricane Irma causes headache for LIAT

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IRMA, the Category 5 Hurricane which is churning in the Atlantic Ocean, has caused major flight disruptions for LIAT in a number of destinations.

     

    The airline which has a route of connecting flights - with any interruption causing major complications for intraregional travel – has a nightmare on its hands.

    In a statement issued yesterday (Sept. 4), LIAT informed that it wishes to advise passengers that several destinations would be affected due to the impending passage of Hurricane Irma.

    Yesterday the airline cancelled eight flights, all in the direction of the Leeward Islands, and an additional 27 were cancelled today.

    In the statement, LIAT said: “The Miami based National Hurricane Center has advised that Irma is expected to affect the north eastern Leeward Islands as a major hurricane. Hurricane warnings are in effect for Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Kitts, and Nevis, St. Maarten and portions of the Leeward Islands. A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico and Tortola. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Dominica.”
     
    The following flights were cancelled for today (Sept. 5):
    LI 773 from Antigua to Barbados
    LI 381 from Antigua to Dominica
    LI 381 from Dominica to Barbados
    LI 521 from Tortola to St. Kitts
    LI 521 from St. Kitts to Antigua
    LI 521 from Antigua to Barbados
    LI 362 from Barbados to Antigua
    LI 310 from St. Lucia to Antigua
    LI 314 from Antigua to St. Maarten
    LI 314 from St. Maarten to Tortola
    LI 315 from Tortola to St. Maarten
    LI 315 from St. Maarten to St. Kitts
    LI 315 from St. Kitts to Antigua
    LI 560 from Barbados to Dominica
    LI 560 from Dominica to San Juan, Puerto Rico
    LI 561 from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Dominica
    LI 567 from Dominica to Barbados
    LI 364 from Barbados to Dominica
    LI 364 from Dominica to Antigua

    The airline however indicated that passengers who were affected by the cancellations would be allowed to rebook within the next two weeks (September 4-18). 

    “Passengers with travel dates from 4th to 8th September will have change fees and fare differences waived. Passengers with travel dates from 9th to 11th will have the change fees waived but will have to pay any fare difference,” the statement said.
