BASETERRE, St. Kitts, September 13, 2017– The back to school experience for 242 students from some 80 underprivileged families in St. Kitts was being made even more exciting thanks to Harper’s Office Depot and its “Stuff the Bus” promotion.

The campaign, which began on August 14, encouraged customers to purchase essential school supplies such as calculators, pencils, pens, rulers, pencil boxes, exercise books, erasers and sharpeners at a special 50 percent discounted rate, to be donated to students in need. The first boxes of supplies, along with a matching contribution from Harper’s, were then presented to the charitable organization Mickey’s Hope on Monday, September 11. They were packed into backpacks for the children, who were identified through the social assistance programme of the Department of Social Services.

Harper’s Managing Director Giselle Matthews said the company has a tradition of giving back to schools and the community. Programmes such as the Courts Reading Competition and the Rotary’s Primary School Spelling Bee Competition are some of the more well known beneficiaries. However, the “Stuff the Bus” promotion was something new and exciting and was a perfect way to mark Harper’s 10 year anniversary in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“We have a good cross section of customers so those who can give more did so to make up for any shortfall,” Mrs. Matthews explained. “We have also had an encouraging response from some of our corporate customers like Kajola Kristada and I would like to encourage more of them to join with us over the last stretch next week.”

The Stuff the Bus” initiative ends on Wednesday, September 20, so persons still have time to make a contribution at the Uptown Superstore at the C. A. Paul Southwell Industrial Park or the downtown store at Fort Street. Items still needed include white out, refill sheets and others.

The sentiments shared by Mrs. Matthews and Connie James, Charity Coordinator for Mickey’s Hope, sums up the value of the 2017 Back to School special.

“Partnerships can be very powerful in helping to achieve what can sometimes seem like unachievable goals. We have to realize that if we join together ‘companies, governments and people’ and we combine our varying resources we can achieve and overcome. We must change our mindset and realize it takes the village to raise and help the child. The burden cannot be on Governments alone.”

The management and staff of Harper’s Office Depot believe that keeping the federation’s children occupied in a productive manner outside the home and away from technology, will be a benefit to our community for years to come. As they keep working to make positive contributions to society, they are asking for as many persons as possible to join with them to achieve what some may now realize is achievable.
