SP City Fest lauded a success

By: VonDez Phipps, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FIG TREE was awakened last night (June 29) with a buzz of activities in the form of competitions, games and live entertainment in the first ever SP City Fest, presented by the Constituency Five Representative,  the Hon. Shawn Richards.

The evening’s event, suspended by a late start, started showing promise in the latter part of the afternoon when over 300 hundred persons from Sandy Point and surrounding communities made their way to Fig Tree Hard Court to enjoy the party.

The earlier part of the evening saw adults and teens participating in games and raffles, as the children had an equally fun time on the bouncing castle and bicycles, while young and older ladies strutted around in their party colours vying for the ‘Most Creative PAM Wear’.

The three-on-three basketball playoff was a heated competition. Only four teams were registered, but the competition was a neck-to-neck battle until the end. After a rigorous round of eliminations, Team 23 secured its position in the Finals while Beehive and C it Dey wrangled in what the referee described as “the most exciting match of the evening”. With only three minutes left on the clock, Beehive quickly pulled four consecutive three-point shots to outdo C it Dey’s 12-point lead, sending Beehive to the Finals.
The final match was equally close for both teams, but after a 15-minute struggle, Team 23 scraped through in the final minute winning the competition 33-27 and walking away with the EC $300 cash prize.

Sandy Point’s talent was exposed and appreciated with the Talent Search segment. Solo performances were made by both new and established artistes who all rendered lyrics of community togetherness and combating criminal activity. Voices of Nikki Farrier, Bal G, C-Money, Flames and De General gave the judges a hard decision, but the crowd’s favourite, C-Money, also won the judges’ favour with his special version of ‘My Wish’. His call for peace and unity in the community and denouncement of gang violence as well as his energetic stage performance were received with feverish applause – the perfect support for the young artiste to claim his EC $1 000 prize.

The town’s famed Lights Out Band rocked the hundreds until early morning and gave the crowd a ‘trembling’ jam session.
Richards, who was actively involved in organising the event, told SKNVibes that it was aimed at bringing young people together to socialise and exposing the various talents within the community.

“I do believe that my track record in community development speaks for itself. I have sponsored a number of sports teams and events, and I have sponsored some of these singers in terms of producing albums. So, this kind of activity is not one of a kind, it’s ongoing. I think it was very successful! Persons came from all the areas within Sandy Point and were of all ages, and the good thing is they not only displayed their talent but were also rewarded for doing so,” Richards said.

Richards indicated that he would continue to encourage such events that would promote community togetherness and provide a fun environment for youth to socialise.
