BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 25. 2018 – THE Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won a landslide victory at yesterday’s elections in that country, unseating the Freundel Stuart led-Democratic Labour Party (DLP).
According to media reports out of Barbados, based on preliminary data from the electoral office, the BLP won all 30 seats on offer.
The victory gives Barbados its first female prime minister in Mia Mottley, and she told party supporters that the victory is not for her nor her BLP, instead the win is for the people of the country.
“This truly has been the people’s campaign and I have said that all along. When we started the process four years ago, rubbing shoulders and hosting the people’s assemblies; and this must be the legacy of the people of Barbados to give you back your government and governance.”
She said that Bajans chose to do what is best for Barbados, and for that she said thanks.
In thanking the former PM Stuart for conceding defeat, Mottley expressed appreciations to him for his service to the country “as the people have spoken”.
While congratulating her newly elected party candidates, Mottley commended them for the high level of sacrifice that they all gave during the short time.
“…I want to welcome to the House of Assembly. For them this is a special journey, and I say to you tonight I have seen in my candidates a level of sacrifice and a level of commitment that has made me proud to be.”
She called on all to move forward as the electioneering stopped on Wednesday.
Reports have indicated that Motley and her Attorney General were sworn in today before the Governor General, Dame Sandra Mason.
