CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - THE Department of Agriculture on Nevis is finalising plans to host its fourth annual Fruit Festival at the Villa in Charlestown on Thursday, July 30.
According a release from the Department, the festival comes at a time when there is an abundant supply of mangoes and other fruits on the island. Emphasis will be placed on fresh, preserved and dried fruits.
The release said that the festival aims at highlighting the versatility of fruits in terms of the range of products that could be made from them. The Department also hopes, through this activity, to encourage persons to consume more fruits and to plant more fruit trees.
So what can one expect at this event?
There will be numerous fruits on display as well as for sale. The Agro Processors on the island will be featured at the fruit festival and they will have a wide range of eats and drinks on display as well as for sale. Residents of and visitors to the island can come prepared to see juices, nectars, ice cream, wines, cake, pies, jams and jellies made from a range of fruits. There will also be craft items and soap made from fruits and fruit by-products.
This year, two competitions will form part of the festival. Persons interested in the Banana ice cream and Cake Competitions should note that the cake should be locally fruit based.
The festival runs from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
