London, England (November 17, 2005): "Magic" Hughes of the Antigua and Barbuda Daily Observer told SKNIS' London-based team yesterday that the Caribbean Islands must not see each other as competitors in the field of tourism.

Mr. Hughes' belief is that the Caribbean must join together and glean from each others strengths to compete with the rest of the world.

He drew reference to the fact that while other countries have so many alternative resources to rely on, the Caribbean has to rely on tourism as its major source of economic stability.

His point was re-emphasized by the presence of Ms. Caribbean Talented Teen, who was the guest of the St. Kitts WTM delegation yesterday.

The teen representative said she hoped to highlight the beauty of the region and to raise awareness of its diversity during her visit.

The importance of this diversity was seconded by Ellen Saunders of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, also representing the Marine World Dolphin and Beaumont Park.

Ms. Saunders said that while the Caribbean Islands should unite, each should also seek to create a niche or brand that would attract tourists.

She explained that the Federation has sought to do so by providing new uncommon attractions for tourists coming to the Caribbean region. She mentioned specifically projects under construction such as Marine World and Beaumont Estate Racing facility.

Larkland Richards, owner of the Bird Rock Hotel agreed that branding is necessary in bringing guests to our shores.

He said while he felt pleased with the success of World Travel Market, he looks forward to meetings now being translated into an increase in overnight hotel guests and cruise passengers to the Federation.

Mr. Richards also hinted at further development of his facility in the near future, adding that it would add dramatic improvement to the Federation's offering of accommodations.
