Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 19, 2018 (SKNIS): The government’s roof repair programme has not only benefited homeowners, but also contractors who have the task of overseeing the repairs and in so doing bringing stability to the lives of those affected by the passages of category five Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

The contractors, who have gained financially and otherwise expressed that they were pleased with the programme the Government of National Unity is undertaking.

In an interview with two of the contractors, they shared their admiration about the roof repair programme.

“I think they are doing a wonderful job because there are a lot of poor people and it’s not everyone (who) can afford to fix back their roof,” said one contractor. “If they could have afforded it, they would have done fix back their roof.”

The other contractor said that the roof repair programme is a “brilliant idea” and that they are moving as quickly as possible to complete the task.

“I’m sorry it couldn’t have been sooner, but still we are moving as fast as we could,” he said. “The homeowners themselves are feeling very comfortable along with myself, who is a contractor and all the other contractors as well.”

The project, which started in April of this year, has seen an average of forty roofs being repaired each week. Over 400 persons have gained employment on the project since it started.

The government is providing the roofing materials and financing the labour costs to those affected through the Office of the Prime Minister with support and guidance from the Ministries of Social Development and Sustainable Development.

According to figures released by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), there were 1,114 reported cases of homeowners with damaged roofs to varying degrees throughout St. Kitts due to the tropical cyclones. The official 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season began on June 1.
