    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, NOVEMBER 18TH 2005 - Governor General His Excellency Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian and Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas were among the first recipients of the new St. Kitts and Nevis machine readable passports this week.

     

     

     

    The new passports, which also carry the CARICOM Logo, were issued to the Federation's top two officials by Chief Secretary, Mr. Joseph Edmeade after submitting the required application forms and witnessing first hand the procedures necessary for the issuance of passports under the supervision of Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Ms. Gail Gilbert.

     

     

     

    Prime Minister Douglas upon receiving his passport thanked Canadian Bank Note Company for partnering with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis in facilitating the provision of the new passports which contain increased security features.

     

     

     

    "I believe this is a significant step in the integration movement within the Caribbean region.  With the increased

    St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas (c) receives new St. Kitts and Nevis Diplomatic and Regular passports with the CARICOM logo from Chief Secretary, Mr. Joseph Edmeade (l) as Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Ms. Gail Gilbert (r) looks on.

     

    vigilance on security, especially in this new age of terrorism, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has done the right thing in bringing in a new passport," said Prime Minister Douglas, who noted that several countries in the region and worldwide have introduced the requirement that travelers possess machine readable passports.

     

     

     

    "I want to commend the Ministry of National Security.  I want to thank the Staff in particular of the Passport Office, especially Ms. Gail Gilbert, who from the inception has being extremely instrumental in bringing us thus far," said Dr. Douglas.

     

     

     

    There are three types of passports - the regular, which is blue in colour; the official, green in colour and the diplomatic, which is burgundy.
