    CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (November 17, 2005) --
Mrs Thelma 'TC' Claxton was adjudged Taxi Driver of the month by the Ministry of Tourism on Nevis for the period September-October 2005.

She won the award consecutively and was presented with an EC$250 Rams Nevis sponsored voucher by Mr. Tyrone O'Flaherty Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism of the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) at the Ministry's Marion Heights office on Thursday.

The contest commenced in July-August 2005 as an initiative designed by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with Rams Nevis in an effort to give incentives to taxi drivers on Nevis, to provide excellent service to visitors to the island.

During the brief presentation ceremony, Mr O'Flaherty said that the Ministry had always felt that the taxi operators are one of the best forces for change in the tourism industry and one of the strongest curves in the wheel of that industry

He said that Mrs Claxton has been one of the outstanding operators on the island, which was evident because she continued and was able to take advantage of what really is a fantastic offer from Rams.

Mr O'Flaherty also took the opportunity to issue a call to other taxi operators to be a part of the contest and that the Ministry was aware that there are many good operators on the island.  He said also that the Ministry would be pleased to see an alternative operator walk away with the gift voucher when it is presented for the period of November-December, 2005 as it would mean that the message was getting across.

TC Claxton winner for the second time of the Taxi Driver of the Month award on Nevis.
Meantime, Mrs Claxton said she was proud to receive the award again and registered her thankfulness to the Ministry of Tourism, Rams Nevis and her fellow taxi drivers of the Queen City Taxi Association.  She challenged other operators to get their forms filled and returned so they to would walk away with the award.

Mr Curtis Morton, President of the Queen City Taxi Association was who was also on hand, congratulated 'TC' on her achievement and described his colleague: She mingles well with the tourists, apart from that 'TC' is a good talker, she is very versed in terms of the island's history and what I like about her is she remains a humble person.

Mr Morton also urged his fellow taxi operators to take advantage of the contest and in an appeal noted that 'TC' was not the only good taxi operator on Nevis "But then you will have to prove me wrong by doing what you have to do. Submit the forms, make sure you treat the guests well and make sure that they remember you, he said.

Ms Elmeder Brookes, Director of the Tourism Research and Development Unit who was also present at the event explained that the contest required a survey form provided by the Ministry, be filled by passengers and returned to collection boxes situated at the Nevis Tourism Authority in Charlestown and at the departure lounge at Vance Amory International Airport at Newcastle.

Ms Brookes said that the winner was judged based on the largest number of positive comments attributed to any one taxi driver from the visitors.

She told Government Information Service that the ongoing contest has satisfied the Ministry's objective based on the comments they have received so far from the questioners.  "From the reports I have seen, those forms I have gotten back indicate that the service has been top class and passengers seem to be pleased with value for their money, and that's what we really want to achieve," Ms Brookes said.
