BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, NOVEMBER 24TH 2005
Principal of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) Dr. Hermia Morton Anthony is expressing confidence that the tertiary level educational institution will rise to the occasion of social and economic transformation at home and all the vicissitudes of the international occurrences that threaten to destabilize the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Delivering the Principal's Report at the 17th Commencement Ceremonies on Tuesday night, Dr. Anthony also reviewed the performance of students in the various divisions and disclosed that starting in January next year, the CFBC will deliver a pilot certificate programme in Caribbean Relations.

She said the entire faculty is confident it can transform the CFBC into an institution that will assume leadership in the promotion of the new relations created through the implementation of the Caribbean Single Market and Economy.

"There is no greater recognition or accreditation for this institution and its programmes than that which is granted by the various local publics through their recognition of and participation in the programmes we deliver," she told the over 200 graduates, their parents, guardians and officials including Governor General His Excellency Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Hon. Sam Condor.

Dr. Anthony said that the CFBC's graduating class of 2005 totals 227 and is the highest number of students from the full-time programmes to graduate from this college in the school's history.

She said that as in most years, the majority of students graduating this year are from the Division of Arts Science and General Studies which comprises 47 percent of the graduating class. The students pursued the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Diploma programme.

The highest number of entries in a single subject discipline was Economics, which also registered a 100 percent pass-rate among the 2005 graduates.  "The staff and students will have the challenge to achieve the measure of success gained by Mr. Hugh Heyliger and his class of 2005," said Dr. Anthony, who also publicly congratulated Ms. Rhenese Herbert for the best performance in the CAPE in the Federation and for capturing the state scholarship for 2005.

Dr. Anthony said that next year the students in the CAPE programme will qualify for the Associate Degree in General Studies, Business Studies, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Humanities, Mathematics, Modern Languages and Natural Sciences.

The students in the Division of Health Sciences recorded a 100 percent pass rate in the Post-basic Certificate in Midwifery and the arduous three-year associate degree in general nursing education. Additionally, all students in the General Nursing Education obtained the license to practice throughout the Caribbean by passing the Regional Nursing Council licensure examination held one month ago.

In 2003 the Division of Teacher Education began delivering courses leading to an Associate Degree in Education; a programme that was franchised from the University of the West Indies School of Education (UWI), Cave Hill Campus, Barbados.

Thirty-five (35) students pursued the two-year programme that included two elective courses in Music and Health & Family Life Education that were designed by the CFBC.

The final results were received two working days ago and although there are some outstanding decisions to be made by the UWI with regard to the most outstanding female student and responses to queries made by students and the college, Dr. Anthony stated that 69 percent of the students qualified, to date, to receive the Associate Degree in Primary and Secondary Education.

The CFBC Principal commended  the staff and students of the Hospitality Studies and Culinary Arts programmes for their outstanding work during the academic year under review and noted that the culinary delights and excellent service delivered at the CFBC CafĂ© in the Nathaniel-John Hospitality & Business Services Centre were sampled during the impressive opening ceremony on February 17, 2005.

Dr. Anthony reported that 13 students entered the UWI Level One programme in 2002. She said that the students transferred to the various campuses of the University of the West Indies. "All the students completed their undergraduate degrees on time. Among them were Mrs. Debbie Isaac and Mr. Ronald Williams who graduated with first class honours from the Cave Hill Campus, while Ms. Fiona Illis Swanston got her first class honours at the Mona Campus Graduation Ceremony held a few weeks ago," said the CFBC Principal.

She disclosed that the gradual expansion of CFBC to establish an education complex that is well integrated into the civil and commercial centre of Basseterre has begun and it is hoped that a percentage of the new residential units currently being built in close proximity to the college will be dedicated for student housing and allow even greater expansion and access through the construction of virtual classrooms.

Dr. Anthony said that E-bizz Solutions, a local company, comprising mainly past students of the CFBC, have built and tested the infrastructure for the delivery of online training.  She said that the faculty is currently being trained to integrate the new technology into the learning environment
