Marijuana tops court charges

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – The Federation’s courts continue to mete out punishment to persons who are found guilty of contravening the law.
     
    At the commencement of the month, a number of individuals stood before the District “B” Magistrate Court, Sandy Point, having been charged with various offences and were fined in accordance.
     
    Jervin Davis, resident of Old Road, was convicted of “possession of marijuana” and was fined $2000 to be paid within three months or, in default, serve three months imprisonment with hard labour.
     
    Another Old Road resident, Donell Bernier, was sentenced to serve six months imprisonment after he was convicted of “possession of marijuana” and “possession of marijuana with intent to supply”.  The Station Street resident was arrested on the charges on August 9, 2009.
     
    For the June 20, 2009 offences of “possession of marijuana” and “marijuana cultivation”, West Farm resident, Clement Watts, was sentenced to a three-month prison term.
     
    Tensroy Percival of Old Road was fined a total of $550 for committing the June 6, 2009 offences of “giving a false name to police when lawfully required” and “possession of marijuana”.
     
    Cayon resident David Greenaway was ordered to pay a $600 fine within two months or face one month imprisonment at Her Majesty’s Prison. The order to pay the fine followed his conviction of an August 25, 2009 “careless driving” offence.  
     
    At Thursday’s session of Traffic Court, which was held at the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial and Legal Services Complex, four individuals were convicted of breaching the Federation’s traffic laws.
     
    Jason Williams of New Road was fined $100 forthwith for “quitting his vehicle with the engine in motion”, while Jason Williams of New Road, John Leader of Taylor’s Village, Denver Herbert of Stapleton and Kirk Flemming of St. Johnston’s Village were all convicted of “driving without due care and attention”.
     
    Leader was fined $300 to be paid within two weeks or serve two weeks imprisonment, Flemming was fined $400 forthwith or serve one week at Her Majesty’s Prison and Herbert was fined $500 and $200 for two incidents which occurred on February 19 and 20.
