Five contestants to blaze at Saddle Fiesta Dancehall Queen Competition tomorrow night

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts- Saddle Fiesta will host its inaugural Dancehall Queen Competition, tomorrow Friday, September 11.  The event will take place from 8:00p.m. on the grounds of Saddlers Primary School.

Five dancers – who go by the stage names Spicy–K, Bubblicious, Macka Diamond, Madness, and the Mystery Lady – will gyrate their body and perform elaborate movements in an effort to take home the dancehall queen title.

The young ladies promise to be better than Patra and Lady Saw.

According to Diana Collins, Chairperson of the Saddle Fiesta Committee, the ladies will take part in three segments.

In the ‘Freestyle’ segment’, each contestant will choose a dancehall mix.  This will be followed by the ‘Soca Wine’ segment, where the girls will select a soca mix that must consist of songs from local bands.

In the third segment dubbed ‘Dancehall Instructions’, the girls will be given a mix of both contemporary and classic dancehall songs as well as dance instructions to execute.

Collins told SKNVibes PEP that she and the committee decided to hold a dance competition instead of a queen show because they were pressed for time.  She explained that they organized the Saddle Fiesta events within a span of two weeks so prospective queen show contestants had too little time to prepare their speeches and talent performances.

She added that the Dancehall Queen contestants are all young women who ‘MASH UP’ the dance floor in the clubs.  So Collins said that she thought of the idea for the competition because she wanted to see if they could move the same onstage by themselves and to any kind of music.

Judges will select a first place winner who will receive a trophy, EC$500, and a phone compliments of LIME.  The second place winner will receive a trophy, EC$250, and a gift basket compliments of various sponsors.    All the contestants will receive participation trophies.
