B.V.I. Tuesday, September 15 – The Archives and Records Management Unit of the Deputy Governor’s Office completed its History Research Workshop yesterday.

The workshop, which is a component of the Deputy Governor’s History Research Awards Programme, was designed for beginners as well as experienced researchers who may need re-orientation in various methods of research.

The workshop was held at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Marine Centre and facilitated by Dr. Patricia Turnbull of RainWater Institute.  In the final session, participants focused on the research process, which involved the sharing and support of participants’ experiences such as challenges, surprises and dilemmas in the field;   guidance in analysing data and organising findings into major themes and providing strategies for writing and presentation.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Deputy Governor’s Office Ms. Arlene Smith speaking at the awards ceremony encouraged participants to put the knowledge and expertise gained at the workshop to good use when doing their own research in the future as well as with the entries they are preparing to submit in the Deputy Governor’s History Research Awards Programme.

Chief Records Management Officer Mrs. Verna Penn Moll told the recipients to keep the interest alive by becoming the nucleus of an historical group which would provide support for continued history research activities, not only for themselves but also for the wider community.

Yesterday’s workshop was the conclusion of a two-part series.  The first workshop was held on May 14 and focused on research methodology, research practice, field work, drafting and communicating with advisors and collaborators.  The winner(s) of the Deputy Governor’s History Research Programme will be announced in December 2009.
