Firemen avert disaster at Hermitage

Firemen put the finishing touch to their efforts

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – QUICK action by members of the Nevis Fire Department yesterday (Sept. 17) averted what could have been a disaster caused by a backyard garbage fire gone out of control.

Firemen were called into action at Hermitage just after 11:00 a.m. when a fire started by Gilbert Terrell in his backyard got uncontrollable and spread to an empty neighboring lot.

An official of the Fire Department said they received a call at 11:15 and when the unit from the Charlestown Station responded they saw about 15 acres of land north of Terrell’s residence, which is on the main road, engulfed in flames. The firemen quickly put out the flames before they could have spread.

The official said Terrell explained that he was burning trash and left it unattended for a few moments. When he returned the fire had spread to the adjoining lot which has an abundance of dry undergrowth.

The official said burning trash in the yard is something the Fire Department advises against.
