CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – A local breast cancer awareness organisation has received a timely boost ahead of the observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The St. Kitts/Nevis Breast Cancer Patient Assistance Fund last Friday (Sept. 11) collected a donation of US$2 000 from the United States-based Women Against Cancer organization which was represented by Siela Bynoe.

Bynoe, who travelled from Long Island, New York, made the presentation in memory of her mother Dolores Dore Bynoe who died of breast cancer in January this year. She presented the money to Dr. Cameron Wilkinson at his Sands Complex, Basseterre office.

Bynoe had some encouraging words for persons who would have been diagnosed with breast cancer. She said such persons should stay in prayer, spend quality time with family and friends and have a strong support system. She also said they should deal with the issues of how breast cancer affects them both physically and emotionally and, if they are undergoing treatment, avoid stress at all times.

She pointed out the importance of testing, urging persons with a family history to start testing early.

“If there is no family history and any symptoms develop, persons should be screened immediately.”

Women Against Cancer is a breast cancer organisation started in 2004 in a quest to fight cancer. It collaborates with research and advocacy organisations and hosts annual fundraisers. It typically supports organisations in the Long Island area, but the donation was made in the Federation in light of Dolores’ part-time residence on St. Kitts and being a descendant of Nevis. Bynoe said that this was the first of what she believes would be many more donations.
