Rotary Club of Liamuiga Serves up Love and Honour to senior citizens on National Heroes’ Day

The Rotary Club of Liamuiga was in action on National Heroes’ Day, September 16, with a fitting honour to senior citizens and residents of the Saddlers Home for the Elderly.  The Club has set aside this date for the last five years to prepare and serve lunch for the residents of that home as well as senior citizens from the Saddlers community.

“We are pleased to bestow deserving honour on the elders of this community as well as the residents of this home on a day like today,” proclaimed President of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga, Laverne Caines.  “It is the fruits of your labour that we are reaping today and so we feel duty-bound to use our Rotary platform to serve you this very special luncheon prepared with love,” said Mrs Caines.

More than half of the Club’s membership turned out and pitched in to make the occasion memorable.  Some contributed dishes and beverages, while others helped with the set up of the tents and tables, and all joined in the serving of the delectable lunch.  In true Rotarian fellowship, members “broke bread” with the seniors and were entertained by their recounting of the many fond memories of the past several decades.

Senior Supervisor in the Ministry of Social Development, Mrs Anne Wigley, expressed great pleasure in having the Club share this activity with the residents of the home.  “We look forward every year to this support from the Rotarians and are very grateful that your Club continues to reach out to the home in this way,” she said.  “The Rotary Clubs of St. Kitts have done quite a lot to assist our senior citizens and I want on behalf of the Government to say how much we appreciate the assistance that we receive,” she concluded.

For the first time this year, all of the senior citizens were also presented with a goody bag made up of items of personal hygiene and other items.  These bags were made and donated by two Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga.
