Taiwan Embassy charity bazaar set for this Saturday

By: VonDez Phipps, SKNVibes
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is staging a grand charity bazaar this Saturday (Oct. 3) aimed at raising funds for the restoration of residential and business areas devastated by Typhoon Morakot in early-August this year.

The embassy is partnering with the Alumni Society of the International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) to gather financial and moral support from nationals. The charity bazaar will have offerings of agriculture produce and electronics from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Frigate Bay lawn adjacent to the third roundabout in the Frigate Bay area.

The Embassy will also be hosting a sale of agricultural produce this week at its Needsmust Demonstration Farm from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Resident Taiwanese Ambassador to the Federation His Excellency Rong Chuan Wu told SKNVibes that an event of this nature should be widely supported, as it bears much significance to the people of Taiwan.

“This event will provide an opportunity for our Kittitian and Nevisian friends to, one on hand, buy our agricultural produce and, on the other hand, support our restoration project in Taiwan. We want the people of St. Kitts-Nevis to be concerned about the people, how their lives have been affected by the typhoon and what we are trying to do to restore the land,” Wu stated.

The devastating Typhoon Morakot whipped the southern part of Taiwan on August 8, resulting in unprecedented floods and nearly 550 fatalities. To date, another 117 individuals have yet to be found. Losses in agriculture reached a record high and thousands were forced out of their homes as a result of the storm.

According to a press release issued by the Embassy today (Sep. 29), it is estimated that a budget of US $3.65 billion is needed for the post-disaster restoration.

The Ambassador therefore encouraged members of the public to come out and support the charity bazaar in contribution toward the expensive disaster relief efforts.
