ECCB 2010 Essay Competition on the way

    CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE 2010 OECS Essay Competition sponsored by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) is on the way.
     
    Deputy Director of the Bank Sybil Welsh revealed the topics for the new competition during the presentation to the winners of the 2009 contest at the Charlestown High School on Wednesday (Sept. 30).
     
    Welsh identified the topics as:
    - The Caribbean Court of Justice is a necessary institution for Caribbean independence. Discuss
    - Culture and arts should be an integral part of our tourism product. Discuss
    - The global economic crisis has created a new kind of nationalism. Do you see that as a threat to the OECS Economic Union?
    - Caribbean integration is more a reality than a myth. How can the youth of the OECS prepare for this union?
     
    The winner of the competition will be awarded a grant of $5 000 while $2 000 will go to the school that student attends. The Runner-up student and school will get $2 500 and $1 500 respectively, and the third-placed student and school $2 000 and $1 000. The school with the most entries will receive $1 000. In the event that a student has left the school from which the essay was submitted, the grant will be awarded to the high school of his or her choice.
     
    The competition is open to students between the ages of 14 and 19 years old who reside in an ECCB territory. Entries close on May 28, 2010 and essays can be submitted to the ECCB Agency Office in each territory or the ECCB Headquarters in Basseterre, St. Kitts.
