CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – POLICE on Nevis have increased their presence in the Morning Star and Prospect areas following a series of break-ins over the past two weeks.

According to Sergeant Alonzo Carty of the Nevis Criminial Investigation Department (CID), the police have added a number of foot and mobile patrols in the targeted areas to curb the menace which comes predominantly as a result of residents leaving their premises unsecured.

“What we realise is that residents are leaving windows and doors open. They say it is for ventilation purposes, and persons are seizing these opportunities to enter premises.”

He said that even though there is an increased police presence, residents should ensure their premises are secured at all times.

Most of the break-ins have occurred during working hours when, according to Cartey, Prospect especially resembles a ghost town. Some also occurred at night while occupants were at home. Despite this however, there have been no reports of physical attacks, and Carty said in the two instances of confrontation the burglars had fled.

SKNVibes understands from other sources that the spate of break-ins in the past two to three weeks number around 12, including two business places.

According to Carty, the police have held a few persons to assist in investigations, but no one has been charged.
