BVI Press Release
B.V.I. Monday, October 5 – Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Julian Fraser RA declared Fire Safety Awareness Week 2009 officially open during a luncheon held yesterday at the Moorings Mariner Inn in honour of the Territory’s fire-fighters.

During his brief remarks Hon. Fraser highlighted that in order for the Fire and Rescue Services Department to continue being successful, discipline must play a key role.

Chief Fire Officer, Mr. Leando Stoutt, during his remarks spoke about the accomplishments of the department and the training opportunities made available by the ministry to ensure continued development and capacity building within the department.

Other activities carried out on Sunday to officially open Fire Safety Awareness Week 2009 included a church service at the Road Town Methodist Church and a motorcade that was led by the 2009-2010 Prince and Princess Gregory and Madison Nelson.  The motorcade featured a number of the fire engines which commenced at Prospect Reef and culminated at Baugher’s Bay.

According to Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Mr. William Penn, the sermon by Reverend Moreland Williams cemented the importance of a fire officer’s role in the community. “His message reflected our dedication to continuous improvement in the services we provide as we work diligently to foster not only an environment of trust and involvement, but a model of excellence in safety commitment,” Mr. Penn said.”
