BVI Press Release
B.V.I. Friday, October 9 – Occupants on the east wing of the Central Administration Building (CAB) are now hearing the sounds of the demolition works in preparation for the installation of the siplast multi-layer roofing system.

“We have started the demolition process of the roofing system while at the same time installing the first phase of the roofing system,” Project Manager John Penn told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

“Roy’s Construction will demolish at least 1750 square feet per day which means that each section of the building’s roof will be demolished in approximately two days.  The building has six wings therefore this process will take 13 days to be completed,” Mr. Penn stated.

During this time the occupants of the building may experience varied levels of noises coming from the roof.  “There will be some noise disruption due to the works being conducted. We are asking all personnel who work on the top floors of the building for their patience and understanding as we strive to improve the working environment of the employees at the CAB,” Mr. Penn added.

When the demolition phase is complete, another crew will install the lightweight concrete which will form the roof slopes.

According to Mr. Penn, the demolition of the roof will pose no danger to the occupants or visitors to the building.  “This process will only be visible from the roof’s surface and will not affect the interior of the building in any way,” Mr. Penn concluded.

The work being performed is part of the air quality improvement project which consists of the roof replacement and the interior remedial works which will include the re-design of the air condition system, upgrading the ceiling grid and tiles, the installation of energy-efficient lighting fixtures and new air conditioned ducts and the replacement of carpet.

On July 13 Government signed a $1.9 million contract with Roy’s Construction Inc. whose offices are based in St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands for the removal and replacement of the existing roofing system at the Central Administration Building.

The Ministry of Communications and Works is committed to ensuring the continued development and proper maintenance of the Central Administration Building in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) and other international standards.
