CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – ALL systems are in place for the Pink Lily Walk-a-Bike-a-Thon set for tomorrow (Oct. 10) from Chicken Stone, Gingerland to Pinney’s Beach.
The event, which begins at 6:00 a.m. at Eva’s Art Gallery, will see walkers proceeding through St. John’s Parish to Pinney’s while riders will go in the opposite direction and approach the finish line from St. Thomas Parish. Participants will be treated to breakfast at Shevy’s and Sunshine’s at the end of the event. Registration is $35 for adults and $20 for children.
According to Pink Lily Founder and Executive Director Lea Parris Cambridge, who is a breast cancer survivor, the funds raised through this event would go towards the screening of 200 women for the disease.
The charity has a target of $50 000 and has so far raised $18 000.
A release from the organisation said medical personnel in both Nevis and St. Kitts are working closely with Pink Lily to organise a sustainable screening programme.
Other services already being offered through Pink Lily include home visits, telephone counselling, and one-to-one counselling.
Pink Lily volunteers, led by Parris-Cambridge, have also been giving educational talks island-wide to employees, church congregations and community groups. They reported that the talks, especially Parris-Cambridge’s personal experience with breast cancer, are helping to reduce the phobia surrounding the disease.
