CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE Charlestown Seventh Day Adventist Church held its first Day of Kindness and Compassion on Saturday (Oct. 10) at the Charlestown High School.

Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry – who was the guest speaker – said the topic was well chosen especially at this time when the society seems to be losing its values. He said young people have many problems and are “angry over so many things” resulting in talks of anger management.

“But I believe if you have kindness and compassion in your heart you won’t have time to be angry; you don’t have time to be short-tempered and frustrated.”

The Premier urged the gathering to practice kindness and compassion on a daily basis and not just for a day. He also said kindness and compassion boil down to love. “Love of God, love of yourself, love of your fellowman, love of your community.”

Premier Parry also said: “Teach the young children what love is. Love is not sex, love is not relationships…love is far deeper and stronger and more binding than that.”

Parry also linked values to kindness and compassion.

“We must be able to keep our premises, our surroundings clean, our school, our classrooms, and the environment clean. All these are practices that establish values. If we are able to do all these things then we truly speak then about kindness and compassion.”

Also speaking on Saturday was Meredith Amory-Field of the Nevis Mental Health Association, who shared on health, and Irene Clarke who shared on encouragement.

There were also songs by Heaven Bound Kids, Heavenly Voices, Shavane Joseph and Serena Wade, and a poem by Jackie Williams.

The programme, which was chaired by Elder Tasha Parry, ended with lunch being served to guests and members.
