    B.V.I. Monday, October 12 – The Ministry of Education and Culture will honour approximately 200 top achievers of the public primary schools for the school year 2008/2009 at the second annual Top Achievers Award Ceremony to be held at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College on Sunday, October 18.
     
    A special award will be presented to the students who have maintained their top position for the three consecutive terms (Advent, Lent and Trinity) of the school year 2008/2009.
     
    Permanent Secretary Mrs. Sheila Brathwaite told the Department of Information and Public Relations that the Ministry of Education extends congratulations to not only the top achievers but to the teachers and parents as well for their dedication and commitment. “I take this opportunity to congratulate all of the top achievers for their excellent performance for the past school year,” she said.
     
    Premier Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, Minister for Education and Culture the Honourable Andrew Fahie and Leader of the Opposition the Honourable Dr. D. Orlando Smith are expected to deliver congratulatory remarks at the ceremony.  The guest speaker will be Pastor Howard Simon, BVI Seventh Day Adventist Church and the proceedings will be chaired by Truancy Officer, Mr. Elmore Stoutt.
     
    The Ministry began this initiative in February of 2008.  A total of 525 students, who were the top three performers in classes one to five of all public primary schools in the Territory, were rewarded for their excellent performance during the Advent and Lent terms of the school year 2008/2009. 
     
    The top students for the Advent and Lent terms were rewarded with a sail along the South Coast, a tour of Jost Van Dyke and a full tour of Anegada, respectively. In addition, special recognition was given to those students who maintained the top three positions for both terms.
     
    The mission of the Ministry of Education and Culture is to provide high quality education and rehabilitative services, as well as, to facilitate access to and participation in sports, recreation and culture, in order to enrich the lives of all residents of the Virgin Islands.
