Delivery van robber shot by police

By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young male Tabernacle resident was yesterday (Oct. 16) shot by a member of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force after he allegedly attacked the officers following allegations of a robbery.

According to Police Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Cromwell Henry, “At about 10:45 a.m. on Friday, October 16, police responded to a report of robbery at Tabernacle and investigations revealed that a young man had robbed a bread delivery van of an undisclosed sum of money before making his escape.”

Henry said that officers confronted the young man in a ghaut in Tabernacle and he resisted arrest by attacking them with stones. He was however subdued after being shot in the leg.

“The young man was taken to the Mary Charles Hospital and later transferred to the JNF General Hospital, where he is warded in stable condition,” Henry explained.

Inspector Henry further stated that charges would soon follow as investigations are continuing.

In spite of numerous past comments that the police are not functioning to the expectations of many, kudos must be given to the lawmen for their recent success in keeping illegal firearms off the streets of the Federation, their quick reaction in the recent apprehension of two juveniles who broke into the St. Kitts Brush Company at the Paul Southwell Industrial Park, and also the ongoing Joint Security Forces Operations that resulted in many finds and arrests.

Henry said that the Police High Command is pleased with the recent success, despite the limited resources available to the Force, and pledges to continue in their drive to minimise and eventually rid the Federation of criminal elements.

He also commended those law-abiding citizens who provided invaluable information that have led to many arrests, and requested that they continue to assist the police in order for them to efficiently and effectively fulfill their mandate.
