BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE region’s leading inter-island air carrier, LIAT, celebrated 53 years of continuous service to the Eastern Caribbean today (Oct. 17), and the company is poised to attain an improved standard of service for many years to come.

The celebrations came with an address from Acting Chief Executive Officer Brian Challenger that outlined some of the major accomplishments of the airline. He agitated for higher levels of positive achievement in all aspects of air travel, urging LIAT staff to never become complacent with the company’s progress.

“While there should be justifiable pride and joy in attaining this milestone, this is no time for us to rest on our laurels,” Challenger said. “As we look to the future, let us all strive therefore to be professional and committed to this company which has played such an important role in our region’s development.”

In the last five years, LIAT has grappled with increasing operating costs and much turbulence over pilot and association disputes, which has been compounded by the unfavourable effects of the global economic crisis. However, the acting CEO made his commitment clear that the company shall continue to serve the region with a high standard despite these challenges.

“This year LIAT has seen significant declines in passenger volume and revenues. Although we have been able to hold our own to date – future success will require a commitment by all LIAT employees to improving service quality levels and efficiency and to reducing operating costs.”

According to the release, this year’s anniversary marks a significant milestone in the history of the company as it signifies some 50 years since the company established its headquarters in Antigua, as well as 50 years since it hired its first flight attendant.

Challenger thanked the airline’s staff and gave Antigua special recognition, as the carrier has been able to add much to the social and economic development of the island.

The company’s 53rd anniversary was celebrated with a Customer Appreciation Day and celebrations continue tomorrow (Oct. 18) with a thanksgiving church service at the Moravian Church in Antigua at 9:00am.
