Police capture wanted Belle Vue shop robber

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONCE again the Federation’s lawmen have proven that they have significantly improved their modus operandi in crime fighting and detection rate. The most recent of this fact lies in the capture of a man wanted for over three weeks and the removal of another illegal firearm from off the streets.

     

    Wanted man Glenville ‘Peter’ Maynard of Tabernacle, also known as ‘Blue Steel’, was captured on Friday (Oct. 16) after being on the run for 24 days and was charged on the following day for “Assault with intent to rob”.

     

    According to Police Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Henry, “Officers of the District ‘B’ Crime Response Unit and the Tabernacle Police Station intercepted a jeep that had alighted the Sea Bridge. On investigating, the officers found Maynard in the vehicle and he was arrested.”

     

    SKNVibes learned that about 11:50 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2009, 20-year-old Maynard and his accomplice Rawle ‘Wally’ Benjamin (22), who were armed, entered a shop in the Belle Vue area, said to be owned and operated by an individual identified only as Shirley, and robbed her of a cellular phone and EC$26 be making their escape.

     

    According to Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime, Joseph Liburd, while the robbery was in progress, the police were notified and they quickly responded which resulted in them nabbing Benjamin.

     

     

     

    Liburd also informed that Benjamin, who is also from Tabernacle, was taken into custody along with the revolver and four matching rounds of ammunition found in his possession.

     

     

     

    This media house also learned that Benjamin had escaped from the St. Paul’s Police Station on the following day. This information was confirmed by Inspector Henry.

     

     

     

    Benjamin remains at large and is still being sought by the police. He is said to be of dark complexion, medium built and is five feet five inches tall, and should not be approached by the public if seen, but rather notify the police.

     

     

     

    Inspector Henry has indicated that the “police are still seeking the public’s assistance in his capture and take this opportunity to thank the media and the general public for their assistance so far in these investigations. Persons with information are asked to call the Tabernacle Police Station at 465-7227 or 911”.

     

     

     

    Meanwhile, another illegal firearm was removed from the streets of the Federation.

     

     

     

    According to a police press release, on Friday (Oct. 16), officers of the Drug Squad and Strike Force conducted separate operations around Basseterre and 50 persons were stopped and searched on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs, arms and ammunition.

     

     

     

    “Nothing illegal was found on them, but quantities of marijuana were found in the areas where these persons were. No one was held accountable,” the release read.

     

     

     

    It further stated that a search warrant was executed on the premises of Bruce Roberts on Wellington Road, where one .380 pistol was found and seized. A number of persons, who were present on the premises, were taken into custody to assist in the investigations.

     

     

     

    This find has taken the number of illegal firearms seized for 2009 to 26.
