BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – EIGHT months after he was found carrying an illegal firearm, a Mansion resident was sent to the slammer to consider the error of his ways.

A police communiqué informs that Justin Morris made an appearance before the Distirct ‘B’ Magistrate Court late last week (Oct. 16) on charges of “possession of a firearm” and “possession of ammunition” for which he was convicted and sentenced to a total of six years, three on each count.

According to information previously issued by the police, officers conducted an island-wide stop and search exercise on February 21, 2009 during which 22 persons and one vehicle was stopped and searched for illegal substances and items.

The information further explains that Morris was one of the persons searched and he was found with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol with 18 rounds of matching ammunition. He, along with the firearm and ammunition, was taken into police custody and subsequently charged with related offences.

Although sentenced to a total of six years, the sentences are to run concurrently.

Meanwhile, Adolphus ‘AB’ Gumbs of Mattingley Heights appeared before the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court, Basseterre on a charge of “driving while under the influence of alcohol”. He was convicted and fined $1 000, which is to be paid within two months or, in default, serve two months imprisonment.
