Saturday’s Open Mic sounded a loud ‘NO’ to Domestic Violence

Press Release
For the third year, the Callaloo Poets raised the awareness to the devastating issue of Domestic Violence with an ‘open mic’ poetry reading this past Saturday. The theme of the ‘open mic’ was “Stop Domestic Violence: Love Doesn’t Hurt” - a collaborative effort with the Family Support Network (FSN). Writers, many garbed in purple, black and/or white and pinned with purple ribbons, rendered poems and songs focused on abuse, love, intimacy and other societal woes.

During the reading, Lauren Keel, who represented FSN, spoke to the audience about the Family Support Network’s role in the community. Lauren was later presented with a cash contribution from the poets and the audience.

The Callaloo Poets would like to thank everyone for the continued encouragement and support. The poets remain committed to sharing their poetry and songs as a positive force of upliftment and inspiration in the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. Their next ‘open mic’ poetry reading is set for November 21. To learn more about the poets, the monthly poetry readings and upcoming publications, please email
