Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 21, 2009 (SKNIS): The Department of Agriculture is encouraging secondary school students of St. Kitts and Nevis to test their writing skills by entering a Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) regional competition.

The essay competition forms part of activities in commemoration of World Food Day which was observed on October 15 under the theme “Achieving Food Security in Times of Crises.”

Specifically targeting high school students, competitors have to write an essay of at least 450 words on the topic “The Right to Food.”  The essay must give the student’s own ideas and vision on the topic and suggestions for combating hunger in the world.

Participants are expected to do research and the Department of Agriculture is encouraging students to come to their base at La Guerite, Basseterre where they can make use of an FAO Information Note for 2009, as well as a cartoon edition of a publication titled “The Right to Food.”

All essays should be sent to the FAO Staff Coop Office by fax or email by the November 15, 2009 deadline.  Address details, submission procedures and any additional information can be obtained from the Principals of the Secondary Schools.
