CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE Guyanese Association of Nevis recently resumed its fund-raising activities with a bake sale at Memorial Square in downtown Charlestown on Saturday, October 17.
The association, which is preparing for elections in December, released information indicating that the sale was a success and plans are afoot to hold another on Saturday, October 31. The release said the sale, which consisted of such Guyanese delicacies as cassava pone, roti and curry, bake and salt fish, began just before 7:00 a.m. and was over long before the estimated 11:00 a.m. schedule.
The funds raised will go towards projects planned by the association, which include awarding students with Guyanese roots who were successful at this year’s CSEC. The ceremony is set for the end of November.
The association, which has undergone a bit of a revival in 2009, meets on the last Wednesday of every month at the Red Cross Building in Chapel Street. Resource personnel are invited to speak at these meetings on a regular basis with the last such personnel being members of Social Security on Nevis.
Meanwhile, the proprietors of MP Express Money Transfer chose Saturday’s bake sale to hold a raffle for persons who made purchases. Patrons did not have to pay for a ticket but were encouraged to purchase from the association. The company’s manager said it was a goodwill gesture to the association since he gets a lot of business from Guyanese.
The draw was made at the end of the sale and the Nokia phone at stake was won by D. Harrilall. The presentation was made by MP Express representative Cherry Ann Williams.
