Hamilton: Federation disintegrating with political mischief

Eugene Hamilton
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, October 21st 2009 (PAM Secretariat) - Deputy Political Leader of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) Eugene Hamilton has accused his parliamentary foe Cedric Liburd, who has been embroiled in a number of legal matters over the past several weeks, of disintegrating the Federation with political mischief.

Hamilton made this disclosure in response to Liburd’s continued accusation of him being responsible for the financial debacle that the British American Insurance Company is faced with despite the institution’s parent company, CL Financial of Trinidad and Tobago disclosing that two of the company’s senior Directors should be held accountable. Lawrence Duprey and Leroy Parris, according to a recent report, cited both gentlemen as making large and ill advised investments in Florida, among other things.

Hamilton said that the Federation is being disintegrated by mischievous political strategies being used by Liburd with the view of creating trouble. He is challenging Liburd to account for the many discrepancies and unethical accusations that he levelled against him, some of which are as a result of statements made recently in court which have implicated the Minister.

“We are seeing our Federation disintegrate with political mischief engineered by Cedric Liburd and the Prime Minister, Dr Douglas. Our systems are eroded, our people insulted and humbled in foreign lands, reduced to menial jobs right here in the Federation in which we are seeing mass laying off of workers and blatant discrimination and victimization of some employees, while more and more of our nationals are forced to flee to other countries in search of betterment.”

The man who has been credited for implementing a national health plan, which has resulted in both Liburd and Dr. Douglas benefitting, said that it was not only PAM-related supporters that were fleeing. “Everyday more and more Labour supporters are leaving too and by any means necessary, as they have also recognised that Dr. Douglas is a selfish man. That is why those within the party refers to him as a dictator.”

“Why as Kittitians and Nevisians must we flee, when together we can take back the once booming Federation of St Kitts and Nevis? We can demonstrate acts of civil disobedience to bring this unruly government that is being led by a man who continues to demonstrate frightening signs of a dictator in check…Where is the will of a people whose history is punctuated by struggle for freedoms, equality and justice?…What have we allowed Denzil Douglas and Cedric Liburd to do to us?” Hamilton questioned.

The PAM Deputy Leader opined that the lack of will to come out in numbers and stand up is the fear that the Labour Party wants to instill in society, noting that the party’s last several events have scent shock waves up the spines of Liburd, Douglas and the rest of government officials.

Referring to what he has pointed out, based on evidence which indicates that the Labour Party is attempting to run a campaign of instilling fear, Hamilton noted that there are those who turn a blind eye and are content to be individualistic in their preservation. He also stated that there are those who are driven by fear, those who would drink milk and those who would not roll over and die without making an effort to bring about change.

“We call on all of you to stand up for yourself…Do something for your future, your family and your children’s future. Join the Peoples Action Movement in whatever way you can to send a message, not just for today, but for tomorrow and for however long it takes that Kittitians and Nevisians will no longer accept incompetence, dictatorship and criminal enterprise masquerading as government. Its time for a change,” he declared.

According to Hamilton, the populace would no longer accept the squandering of the Federation’s resources and rampant corruption. “We will not accept tyranny instead of democracy and the violations of law and order. We will not accept both Cedric Liburd and Dr. Denzil Douglas’s lawlessness…We will engage in civil disobedience, a quiet sustained rebellion against evil.”

Giving a recount as to what brought about the current court case against Liburd and the government, Hamilton said that over the past weeks his party continues to see the need to increase their vigilance as the government is up to a lot of tricks. Vowing that the PAM would continue, he said the struggle would be a long and tedious one. He however insisted on staying the course in order to achieve their success, which he noted is not far in the near future.

“We will not rest until each and every Kittitians and Nevisians and persons living in this Federation can have their rights respected…PAM’s strategy is to send a message to the Douglas administration and also to remind Liburd that he didn’t win his seat in 2004, but this time we will not sit back and allow him to steal, as he cannot fool all of the people all of the time; that an indomitable will to resist still rests in this Federation and it will not die…We aim to sensitize those who need sensitizing and stir the will of the people to recognize that they have a responsibility to resist their submersion by evil and dictatorial government practices.”

He also quoted the world famous Mahatma Gandhi who had said, “Non-cooperation with evil is a sacred duty.” Hamilton said that the party was determined to edify every  Kittitian and Nevisian to recognize that the power rests with them and not with any group, political party or leader; “that they have a right to hold this government accountable for its continuous  failures and transgressions…that government, including Dr. Douglas and Cedric Liburd, among others were hired by you the people to do a job that will bring about the growth and prosperity of this federation …This government has a responsibility to all and must be held accountable by all.”
