Vagrant sentenced to four months with hard labour

By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A man of no fixed place of abode was yesterday (Nov. 10) sentenced to serve four months with hard labour in Her Majesty’s Prison.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate, Her Worship Josephine Mallalieu-Webbe at the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial and Legal Services Complex in Basseterre, Valentine Graham was found guilty for “being found in an enclosed premises”.

The court was told that about 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31, 2009, police received information from a public-spirited citizen that a man was seen lurking on the premises of a College Housing resident, who was overseas at the time.
Responding to the report, Corporal Greaux and Constable Elvin Browne proceeded to College Housing and found Graham lurking on the premises.

“After receiving the information, Constable Browne and I went to College Housing and found the gates to the premises were secured by locks. We however entered the premises by jumping over the fence and a man, who was later identified as Valentine Graham, was seen on the southern side of the building peeping through a glass louvre window.

“I asked him what he was doing there and he responded by saying that he was hungry and ‘I went to pick mangoes’. There were no mangoes on the tree, and when we searched him no mangoes were in his possession.

“I asked him if he was residing there and he said no. I also asked him if he had permission to enter the premises and he said that he was hungry. We arrested him, took him to the station, where he was subsequently charged with being found in an enclosed premises,” Greaux said.

On his first appearance before the Chief Magistrate on November 2, Graham pleaded guilty but with explanation. He told the court that “some fellows on bikes from McKnight wanted to do me harm”, so he jumped the fence to escape from them.

After listening to his explanation on that day, the Chief Magistrate said he could not plead guilty and ordered him to return to court yesterday. However, the evidence given by the police contradicted Graham’s explanation and he was convicted for the offence.

An individual, who was present at Graham’s sentencing and claimed to know him well, said, “Valentine no longer has to search for mangoes to satisfy his hunger, he will be fed and housed as a guest of Her Majesty’s Prison.”
