Wednesday, November 11 – Students at the Bregado Flax Educational Centre Secondary Division are gearing up for their 2009 Career Expo which will focus on small business and technical sectors in the economy in light of recent and ongoing changes.

The expo which will be held at the Catholic Community Centre is slated for Thursday, November 12 and Friday, November 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. under the theme, “The Interrelation of Academics and Skills”.

Coordinator of the Career Expo and Guidance Counsellor Ms. Keriann Malone told the Department of Information and Public Relations, “The objective of the expo is to offer career information to the high school students about the wider career opportunities available in the various fields of work in the British Virgin Islands and to expand the minds of the students.”

Noting the exposure that the expo will provide to students she said, “This will widen their intellectual and cognitive development while increasing their awareness and possibly spark their interest.”

She added that this event will assist, particularly the fourth and fifth form students in their career choice.

“It is a pleasure for me to have the opportunity to assist in organizing this expo as it will introduce an array of careers within many different fields of work while providing the academic and technical relations to those interested and I also expect that they will learn the importance of time management,” Ms. Malone said.

The two-day event will include presentations highlighting careers in tourism, fire and rescue services, law enforcement, sports, culinary arts, hotel and restaurant management, construction, architecture, dentistry, health, mental health, addiction rehabilitation, medical, agriculture, communications, social development, financial services, and other government and private sector services.

Also assisting in the organizing of the expo is Mrs. Kishann Cupid-Braithwaite who is an intern at the school as a guidance counsellor.

The career expo, held annually, is designed to expose the students, particularly the senior students, to the world of work.
