Patriots apologise after disappointing home leg

    …suffered four consecutive defeats

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AFTER closing out its home leg of the 2023 Caribbean Premier League with a fourth consecutive defeat, the St. Kitts-Nevis Patriots have apologised to their fans.

In their final game at Warner Park, before they hit the road again, the Patriots suffered another defeat, going down to the Trinbago Knight Riders by 6 wickets.

“Thank you St. Kitts and Nevis, you were awesome as always. Apologies, we couldn’t even give you one win at home,” the Patriots wrote on its official social media page.

Fans and media personnel expressed disgust at the performance of the team over the last five days, with some going as far to criticise individual players and calling for the squad to be broken up ahead of the next season..

Stand-in captain for Sunday (Aug. 27) evening’s game, Sherfane Rutherford underscored the importance of the team working as a unit.

In the games played at Warner Park, the home side failed to work as a collective with the batters scoring competitive totals, but the bowlers lacked the skill set to pressure the batters.

“It was another day of cricket and we did not bowl well again. But having said that, nothing is guaranteed and I think that we should take the positive route and come back strong,” Rutherford said.

Looking ahead, Rutherford noted that the team must now win all of its remaining games in order to make the playoffs at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.

The home team opened the St. Kitts leg of the tournament with a 8 wicket defeat by defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs.

On Thursday evening, looking to bounce back against the Guyana Amazon Warriors, the Patriots were thumped by 64 runs before a crowd of both Guyanese and local supporters.

In the second of a double header on Saturday, the Patriots scored 197, when they squared off against the Barbados Royal.

However, hard-hitting allrounder Rhakeem Cornwall punished the bowlers for their indisciplined line and length to set up a fantastic 6-wicket win for the visitors.

The local franchise will now regroup and fight as they head over to Barbados for two more games prior to flying out to Trinidad and Tobago before rounding out the competition in Guayana.
