BASSETERRE, St Kitts 7 November 2023 -- Five Sandy Pointers will be honored at the Sandy Point Benevolent Society’s (SPBS) 11th Annual Awards Gala to be held in St Kitts & Nevis this year.  The event will be held on 26 December, 2023 at the St Kitts Marriott Resort.

Each year, the SPBS receives nominations for outstanding citizens whose work has impacted their community or country and honors the winners at its year-end gala. The selection of honorees is determined by those who receive the most votes via a voting platform. There are five categories of awards from which the selections are made.

This year, the distinguished service in Education Award will be conferred on Mrs Alexandrina Caesar. With a near 4 decades record in education, Mrs Caesar retired in 1991 as Principal of the Newton Ground Primary School. She entered the profession in 1953 and over the years received training in a variety of disciplines that enabled her to deliver the best classroom experience. Seventy years later, she can proudly point to many upstanding citizens whose lives she helped to mould during their formative years.

Corris “Ziley” Douglas will receive the Distinguished Service in Business Award. A self-motivated entrepreneur, Corris displays a can-do attitude which has helped to keep his business growing. Since 2007, he has operated E&K Minimart providing employment for many while contributing to the economic development of Sandy Point and the neighbouring communities. He has used his business to fuel his philanthropic spirit through sponsorship of sporting teams as well as social outreach programmes.

Meanwhile, James “Bunny” Pemberton will be recognised for his community spiritedness, and will receive the Community Service Award. He has earned the name of “community servant” in Sandy Point where his work in sports and community development in general is well documented. A retired Social Services worker, Mr Pemberton has been actively involved as a founding member of many organisations in Sandy Point ranging from the Sandy Point Red Cross to numerous Athletic Clubs.

In the area of Sports, Mr Stewart “Daff” Rawlins will mount the podium to receive the Distinguished Service in Sports award. A four-decades veteran in Sports, Mr Rawlins has been a Teacher and Sports Master and has under his belt numerous accomplishments in athletics, football and cricket. He has mentored and coached many successful athletes in the transfer of knowledge to successive generations.

Iconic calypsonian and entertainer, Walston “Starshield” Shield has received the nod for the Distinguished Service in Culture Award and will receive his plaque at the December event. His contributions to the calypso artform go back to his days as a highschooler representing Sandy Point High School in the junior calypso competition. He won the junior calypso crown in the 1970’s and went on to win the national crown on several occasions as well as representing St Kitts and Nevis in international competitions.

The awards ceremony is only one of the highlights of this star-studded event. The SPBS Awards Banquet is an exciting mix of entertainment, giveaways, raffles and prizes. Tickets for the highly-anticipated gala are available from members of the St Kitts Chapter of SPBS as well as members in its home base in New York.  Prospective patrons also have the option of purchasing tickets online at www.spbsinc.org/tickets.
