CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – A young swimsuit designer will be hosting a fashion show in Nevis dubbed ‘A Swimwear Dream for Christmas’ on Sunday, December 20.
Petal Newton, who is originally from Guyana but resides in Nevis, told SKNVibes that she would be launching her swimsuits for the first time at the Pinney’s Beach Hotel beginning at 6:00 p.m. Newton said that fashion and designing were always a part of her from a young age and that she learnt to sew from visiting her grandmother Muriel English during school holidays.
“I normally would help her sew on buttons and hem etc., and, of course, she was the one that inspired me,” she said. “From a young age I crave nice things, or so my mom would say, and I like anything fashion that would enhance and boost the today’s look.”
Newton said that she has had some experience in modelling and after leaving the agency she decided to pursue her ambition of launching her swimsuit line. “I always have my sketchbook with me and I said to a friend of mine one day on my way to work, I’m starting my swimwear designs soon, and she was like, ‘for real?’
“When I showed her my sketchbook she was amazed; right away she put in her order. I even had three different orders, as a matter of fact, even before I started tailoring,” Newton said. Along with Newton’s swimsuit designs the fashion show will also feature several designs of boutiques and local designers and also of a St. Lucian designer.
The designs will be showcased by models from S Model Management and Platinum Models Inc. of St. Kitts and Nevis respectively.
Proceeds from the show will go to the Pink Lily Breast Cancer Care. Newton said that her swimwear designs are unique, they are like no other and that the show is a must see.
