PM Drew talks Climate Change at CELAC Meeting

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. kitts -- PRIME Minister Dr. Terrance Drew emphasized the interconnectedness of the regional community during his address at the recent CELAC Meeting in Kingstown, highlighting the imperative for proactive responses to challenges such as climate change.

Drew underscored the tangible impacts of climate change in the region, including beach erosion, sargassum infestations, erratic weather patterns, and persistent droughts. He noted the exorbitant costs associated with adapting to these challenges, stressing the scarcity of available financial resources.

Reflecting on recent discussions at COP28, Drew expressed frustration over the sluggish implementation of decisions and promises made at such gatherings. He emphasized the disproportionate impact on the most vulnerable countries, citing St. Kitts and Nevis as an example, where severe droughts necessitate investments in desalination, straining already limited budgets.

Despite these challenges, Drew asserted a proactive stance, highlighting the Sustainable Island State model developed to address both adaptation and development needs. He emphasized the importance of seeking partnerships rather than sympathy, recognizing the necessity of collective action in the face of climate threats.

Drew called attention to the inadequacies of the current international financial structure, advocating for support of initiatives like Mia's Bridgetown Initiative, which aims to rectify the disadvantages faced by developing states and promote a more equitable system conducive to their growth and resilience.
