BVI GIS Press Release
Friday, December 11 – The Ministry of Communications and Works is reporting that over 1400 licence plates were changed as part of its efforts to ensure that all affected by the Road Traffic Regulations 2009 are compliant by March 1, 2010.

The 36-day campaign which spanned from September to November was geared toward commercial, taxi and livery service vehicles. “Even though we had a good turnout during the campaign, there is still a lot more to be done,” Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Myrna Ferdinand told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

“In terms of the CM to PV transfers, we appreciate the response in this category, which recorded the most licence plates changed; however there is still a large number of CM plates on the road that do not fit the definition of the new criteria and they must be changed,” Mrs. Ferdinand said.

She further stated that companies providing tours and shuttle services using CM plates will be given a grace period until February 28, 2010, during which time they will be required to get their drivers qualified to obtain the livery permit for operation of vehicles bearing T(tour) and S(shuttle) licence plates.

The acting deputy permanent secretary announced that beginning March 1, 2010, the Road Traffic Regulations 2009 will be enforced, resulting in ticketable offenses and citations for those who are not in compliance.

Government is seeking the cooperation and support of all parties involved to make the transitions as smooth as possible. The licence plate transfers are part of efforts to provide efficient services in vehicle licensing matters and to enhance drivers’ safety in compliance with the road traffic legislation of the Territory.
