BASSETERRE, St.Kitts, December 17, 2009 (Labour Secretariat) - The people of Sandy Point/ Fig Tree (Constituency #5) have been abandoned and betrayed by their Parliamentary Representative, Shawn Richards, for the past five years, says Prime Minister Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.
He made the charge recently at a massive public meeting of his ruling St.Kitts/Nevis Labour Party in Crab Hill, Sandy Point.
“The only time that Richards has come to see me about a matter, it was not specifically about the people of Sandy Point/Fig Tree. It was about the PAM candidates not being able to access community centres around the island,” he stated.
Dr. Douglas said he was never approached and asked by the lone PAM Parliamentarian Richards to address any of the needs and concerns of the constituency and inhabitants.
“He has never come to me as the Prime Minister to ask about concerns such as housing, lands or scholarships for the people of Constituency #5,” the Labour Party leader added.
Additionally, PM Douglas spoke about Richard’s frequent absenteeism from the House of Parliament sessions during the last five years since elected to serve the people.
“Richards has failed you for the last five years he has been in Parliament. He has been out of Parliament more than he has been in Parliament.” Dr. Douglas said.
He advised voters that Richards “should receive a sound defeat…because he does not deserve the honour of representing the people of Sandy Point/Fig Tree anymore. He has turned his back on you.”
Meanwhile, the St.Kitts/ Nevis Labour Party candidate for Constituency #5, Dr. Norgen Wilson said Richards does not care about the people of his constituency and that his wasted time is up.
“We are not looking for excuses. Richards has not done anything for the people of Sandy Point and Fig Tree. Let us move forward. Let us make Sandy Point look like the town it is supposed to be,” Dr. Wilson said.
As indicated by Dr. Wilson, he has chosen to be a part of the Labour Party team because that administration is the best vehicle that will help him to represent the people of Sandy Point/Fig Tree in the National Assembly.
He reiterated that Constituency #5 deserves better representation and admonished voters there to do the right thing and effect the change needed urgently.
“No matter who you are, whether you are a PAM supporter or are a Labour supporter, the best thing for Sandy Point and Fig Tree right now is a unity between me and you..,” he concluded.
