The UWI Global Campus, Barbados. Monday, May 19, 2025 — The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Global Campus is pleased to announce a partnership and project with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Barbados—more specifically, with the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES) through its Entrepreneurial Development Training Programme (EDTP). YES, wishes to have the training programme assessed, reviewed, planned, and developed for formal delivery, with successful candidates receiving a certificate that is credentialed by The UWI Global Campus.

The UWI Global Campus is a leading provider of accessible, flexible, and high-quality continuing and professional education, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. With a physical presence in sixteen Caribbean countries and approximately 20,000 graduates as of 2024, the Campus exemplifies regional reach and impact. As part of The University of the West Indies—an internationally recognised higher education leader committed to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—the Global Campus aligns its work with the SDGs and national development priorities. Particular emphasis is placed on SDG 4, which seeks to ensure inclusive, equal, and high-quality education and provide lifelong learning opportunities for all, and SDG 8, which aims to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.

In demonstrating this commitment, a formal signing ceremony was held on Friday, May 9, 2025, at the Ministry of Youth’s offices in Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall. At the event, Dr. Francis O. Severin, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of The UWI Global Campus, emphasised that the credentialing initiative is strategically aligned with The UWI’s “Triple A” Strategic Plan (2022–2027), as well as its mission: "to advance learning, create knowledge and foster innovation for the positive transformation of the Caribbean and the wider world."

According to Dr. Severin, “Credentialing is a systematic approach to the collection and verification of YES’ professional qualifications. The qualifications that are reviewed and verified include, but are not limited to, relevant training, certification and/or registration to practice in the entrepreneurship field, academic and professional standing”. He further stated that “credentialing plays an important role in the education, training and development fields, as it seeks to verify the quality of a programme and acts as a necessary qualification for other jobs and other endeavours or professional pursuits”.

The Honourable Charles Griffith, M.P., Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, emphasised that this project is an exciting opportunity for young people in vulnerable communities to acquire a university-accredited certificate which is regionally and internationally recognised through The UWI brand. He stated, “The fact that you have youngsters who, in some cases, are coming from what we call ‘the blocks’ and being involved in the youth training, and to be able at some point in time after completing the programme, to say, I have a certificate that is a university-stamped certificate, would mean a lot.”

Under this agreement, The UWI Global Campus will be responsible for quality assurance review of the course outline and content; project administration and management; conducting needs assessment; content planning, development and preparation of the credentials for participants who have successfully participated in the training.
