BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MARCH 16TH 2006
     - Dominica is the venue for a consultation on the development of the Eastern Caribbean Geothermal Development Project.
Coordinated by the Organisation of American States (OAS), stakeholders from the Geo-Caraibes partner countries, including St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis and Dominica will meet in Roseau from March 15th to 17th.

According to the Director of the OAS Office in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr. Starret Greene, the project is designed to prepare the market conditions to enable the commercial development of geothermal power in each of the partner countries.

"In the case of St. Kitts and Nevis, substantial progress had been made in advancing the project. The progress is evidenced during the recently completed pre-feasibility phase, and surface studies (that) showed that the best location in St. Kitts and Nevis for geothermal resources appeared to be in the area of Bath Estate, on Nevis," said Mr. Greene.

The OAS Director also spoke of progress in geothermal resource development policies, and revealed that draft legislation had been prepared in consultation with the Government of the Federation.

"The ultimate goal of this project is to help each of the partner countries to achieve commercial development of geothermal power as an alternative source of energy", Mr. Greene remarked.

"Given the high price of energy and the concerns about geopolitical instability, the OAS views the project as invaluable to the diversification of energy sources, not only in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis but also in the other two countries as well,"  the Director concluded.

Geo-Caraibes was launched in 2003, and is implemented through a partnership that  includes the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Agence Francaise de Development (AFD) and the Organisation of American States (OAS), on behalf of the  Global Environmental Facility (GEF).
