CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (March 21, 2006) -- Premier of Nevis Hon Vance Amory and other members of the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) have placed on record their strong condemnation of the senseless attack on two residents of Gingerland and called on citizens to take a stand against crime and violence.
The call came in the aftermath of a shooting incident in which business owner Mr Wendell Huggins and his partner Ms Judith Hendrickson were shot by robbers on Sunday March 19, 2006 at their premises at Poor Mans Bar in Rawlins, Gingerland. Both are patients at the Alexandra Hospital and are listed as being in serious but stable conditions.
All citizens of our country must condemn this outrageous act of violence on two innocent peace loving and hardworking young persons. The Premier and his Cabinet call upon all citizens top take a stand against crime and violence in all corners of our society, to help rid this country of the negative impact of such senseless and devastating acts.
"The Premier and all Cabinet members also call upon all perpetrators and supporters of criminal activity - drugs, violence and other anti-social behaviour - to cease their selfish pursuits of such activity and to begin to recognise the serious negative impact that this is causing to our young people and to the country as a whole," The NIA said in a press statement on Monday, 20, 2006.
According to the NIA, the government expected every individual in the country to express strong condemnation against all criminal activity and to help the Police to stamp out crime and violence from a peaceful Nevis.
The Police will continue and will intensify their relentless efforts to stamp out crime in our midst and have been advised to take all legitimate action to achieve this objective. It is expected that the perpetrators of this evil act against this innocent and hardworking young couple will swiftly be brought to justice.
"The Premier and Cabinet reiterate their policy of zero tolerance against all criminal activity and will give the Police whatever support needed to accomplish their tasks," the statement said.
The NIA also expressed its best wishes to the couple for a full recovery and for the return of peace and safety in all communities.
