Basseterre, St. Kitts (20 March 2006) - A world of opportunity awaits hundreds nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis when the Local Organising Committee of ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 launches its Volunteer Programme on Wednesday 22 March 2006 at the Bird Rock Beach Hotel.
According to Julie Martin, Chairperson of the St. Kitts-Nevis Volunteer Committee, "volunteerism is a regular phenomenon that has contributed to the success of national events like the Music Festival and Carnival, so come March 2007, the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis will have no problem deploying the more than three hundred needed to get the job done."
Shortly after the media launch on Wednesday, the recruitment programme will begin, followed by the accreditation phase, then extensive training. It is also expected that many volunteers will be used during the One Day International and Test Match in May and June.
This media launch comes on the heels of the regional launch of the volunteer programme which was kick-started in Jamaica on Saturday, 11th of March. Ministers of Government and representatives from ICC CWC 2007, Sponsor representatives, Local Organising Committee CEOs and other LOC and ICC Cricket World Cup Staff, Jamaica LOC volunteers and the media were on hand in Kingston for the occasion.
Called CWC Vibes, volunteers will come from all walks of life, have their own identity, receive training, wear specially designed uniforms and perform a number of tasks in twenty different specific areas " from helping to facilitate the accreditation of media, to working as translators and queue busters, ushers and Venue Operations Centre assistants. Volunteers will also play an important role as the eyes and ears of the security teams and the training provided will help enhance not only the spectator and visitor experience, but the sponsors" brands.
The experience of being a volunteer for this once-in-a-lifetime is more than about giving. It's about "giving something back" as this event will leave a long-lasting and positive legacy and a nation of well-trained and experienced people who can further be an important asset for subsequent events. When all is said and done, a volunteer can proudly say, "I was there, I was a part of it."
The Launch will take place in the conference room of the Bird Rock Beach Hotel from 10am until 12 noon. The Governor General, Ministers of Government, sporting officials, the Board of the Local Organising Committee, staff, Committee Chairpersons and members of the media have all been invited to attend.
