NNP Press Release

St. George’s, Grenada -  Members of Her Majesty’s Opposition says the intention of the Government to sign an agreement with Trinidad and Tobago next Wednesday must not be taken lightly by the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The Opposition has noted efforts by the Government in the last 24 hours to convince the Opposition to support the consultation session planned for today and an unofficial invitation for the Opposition to travel to Trinidad to witness the signing of the agreement between the two countries. The Opposition wishes to make it abundantly clear that it will always act in the best interest of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique and will never allow the government to use its members to support its Public Relations show.

In the interest of the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, the Opposition is totally prepared to sit with the government to discuss this very important matter under one condition that the Government postpone the signing of the agreement next Wednesday to give adequate time to hold genuine consultation with the official Opposition and with the people of Grenada Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The Opposition says the NDC Government continues to disrespect the people of the country by making important decisions in haste and without the engagement of the people of the country, which have far reaching implications. The Opposition is therefore calling on the Government to seek the country’s interest by first taking time to gather relevant information which is already available to Trinidad and which gives them an advantage over Grenada.   It must not be forgotten that Trinidad entered the negotiations with complete knowledge of the area’s oil and gas potential while Grenada knew nothing having refused to deal with GPG who would have carried out the necessary detailed and extensive exploration and provided this country with the relevant information to the highest degree of accuracy.

The Opposition finds it difficult to understand why the Government is in such a rush to sign an agreement which could be extremely detrimental to the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
