BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Customs and Excise Department confiscated over 500 rounds of ammunition after a sweep of one of its warehouses on Monday (May 17).

According to a release from the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary, Erasmus Williams, Comptroller of Customs Rodney Harris said the discovery was made by the department’s K9 Unit during a routine patrol at the Deep Water Port at Bird Rock.

Harris told Williams that the concealed ammunition consisted of 148x.9mm rounds, 200x.45mm ball point, 48x7.62mm, 50x.40mm, 50x.380mm and 50 x.45 mm hollow point rounds; a total of 546 rounds.

Speaking to SKNVibes, the Comptroller said the ammunition was found on Monday morning and given to the police force’s Drug Squad by that same afternoon.

Harris declined to give further details, stressing that he preferred to utilise government communication channels instead of directly responding to the media.

Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime, Joseph Liburd, confirmed that the ammunition is in police custody.

He also said investigations were ongoing and that no one had been taken into custody over the incident.

SKNVibes however learnt that the ammunition came from the United States of America and consigned to a young man in Keys Village, whose name this media house has withheld until police investigations are completed.

This media house has further learnt that the ammunition was wrapped in a tent within a barrel that had arrived at the warehouse approximately one month ago. Since its arrival [the barrel], neither the consignee nor any other individual went to clear it.
