Local winners announced for the FCCA Essay Contest

    (CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS--WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30th 2010)  The Ministry of Tourism announced the name of the local winners of the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) 2010 Children’s Essay Contest in an interview with the Department of Information this week.
     
    According to the Officer in the Ministry of Tourism, Ms. Vanessa Webbe, 12 year old Ms. Dymon Browne of the Ivor Walters Primary School is Nevis’ finalist in the Junior Division, while 14 year old Ms. Kristal Hodge of the Charlestown Secondary School captured first place in the Senior Division.
     
    Primary and Secondary Schools students were invited to participate in the 2010 FFCA essay contest.  The participants were asked to submit essays of 300 to 500 words on the topic “What can my destination do to become more competitive in the global tourism market?”
     
    According to Ms. Webbe, “the judges commented that the students critically addressed the topic and emphatically, presented brilliant ideas that are practical for implementation.”
     
    The two winning essays have been forwarded to FCCA’s office in Florida for the final round of judging, where overall winners in the Caribbean will be selected. FCCA will award cash scholarships to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each category.
     
    The first place winner will receive US$3000.00, second place US$1,500 and third place US$1000.00.
     
    To reward the students for their efforts, all finalists (except first, second and third place winners) will receive US$200.00.
     
    Twenty-two essays were submitted by 7 primary schools and six from two secondary schools.  The essay contest was coordinated on the local level by the Nevis Ministry of Tourism.
