Security guard jailed for stealing from Chinese employer

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE man, who stole a sum of money from his employer while performing security duties, was yesterday (Nov. 7) sentenced to nine months imprisonment with hard labour.

Thirty-one-year-old Travis Christmas of Dorset Village appeared before Her Worship Josephine Mallalieu-Webbe at the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to larceny.

The court was told that on Friday, August 6, 2010, Christmas stole $4 340 from a drawer while performing security duties at the Island Food Grocery, situated opposite Uncle T’s Fast Food outlet on Cayon Street.

Information reaching SKNVibes at that time indicated that a sum of money was removed from the cash registers, secured in a black plastic bag and placed in a drawer.

However, sometime after 10:00 p.m. when the proprietor, Alex Li, and some of his employees were counting the day’s earnings, they realised that $4 340 was missing.

This media house learned that they made a search of the area with the hope of finding the missing money, but that was not to be. However, on reviewing the day’s recordings on the security cameras, Christmas was seen removing the money and putting it into his pocket.

On return to work the following day, he was arrested by the police and taken to the Basseterre Police Station where he was charged for the offence.

Christmas appeared in court sometime in the past to answer to the charge and had pleaded not guilty. He however appeared yesterday with a lawyer and changed his plea, while his counsel begged the court for leniency.

The plea fell on deft ears as an examination of his record indicated that he was recently convicted and fined in the High Court for obtaining credit by false pretence. Consequently, Her Worship sentenced him to serve nine months at Her Majesty’s Prison with hard labour.
